Borough Market in Spring

When in London... go stuff your face at a food market. That's the general rule, right?

After a morning visiting the Sky Garden and taking in the views of Tower Bridge and the Shard, one sunny weekend, we found ourselves in Borough Market. The smell of the food market is insane and it hits you as soon as you spot the first umbrella. From curries, to grilled cheese, to fresh baked goods, to bratwurst, to burgers. Borough Market seriously has it all.

Bread Ahead Bakery was at the top of my list of stops to make Borough Market. I have been following those infamous doughnuts on Instagram for far too long and oh my, were they worth it! Soft and doughy and delicious. The filling of the Hazelnut and Almond doughnut was so fluffy and creamy and just melted in the mouth. Drool. The sad thing was they were sold out of the honeycomb ones, but I’ll be sure to go back.

I mean, I thought the Krispy Kreme doughnuts were the best. But they have met their match in these dreamboats.

The market was heaving by midday so make sure you get there early afternoon so you don’t miss out on anything. Like those honeycomb doughnuts. For lunch, my sisters queued up for a gluten free Indian option, which smelt incredible, while I popped over to Scotchtails with a scotch egg and sweet potato fries. Any excuse for sweet potato fries.

The yolk was perfectly runny. Just look at it! I highly recommend sticking out the queue to get your hands on a Scotchtails meal if you’re near Borough Market. I’d be in trouble if I worked nearby, but I’d probably work my way round every stall, which if you think about it would be an achievement.

The grilled cheese stand had a huge crowd, the sight of gooey melted cheese is enough to pull anyone in. The grilled cheese sandwiches were stacked, ready to be fried in all their goodness. The heaving queue was the only thing that stopped me from grabbing one.

With full stomachs, we made a final walk through, picking up things to take back home with us. I kinda wish I’d sampled more breads there, more of the baked items but the savoury items won me over this time. Next time it’ll be all about the grilled cheese, cookies and bread.

Have you been to Borough Market? If so, what other stalls do you recommend? And Londoners, which other food markets are worth giving a visit on the weekends?!
